Find your question

Every research project is really just a long attempt to answer one sentence. This step is about turning a vague curiosity into that sentence — a question sharp enough that evidence can actually answer it.

What is a research question?

Your research question is the single sentence your whole project exists to answer. Everything you read, measure, and write should trace back to it. Get it right and your project has a spine; get it wrong and you'll wander for weeks. That's why it's Step 1 — and why it's worth taking real time here.

The big picture

The research process is a loop, not a line

Before you zoom in on your question, it helps to see the whole journey. Researchers usually break it into eight stages that circle back on each other — here's how they fit together:

Notice it's a loop, not a straight line. You might reach stage 3 and realize you need to head back to stage 2 and read more. That's completely normal — not a failure.

Identify the problem

It starts when you notice something confusing, unresolved, or barely studied in a topic you care about. It doesn't have to be dramatic — “nobody agrees on why X happens” or “there's little research on Y here” both count.

Review the literature

Before you can add anything new, find out what's already been said. Read the articles, books, and papers others have written on your topic — like catching up on a years-long conversation before you jump in.

Set questions & hypotheses

Narrow that big conversation down to your own specific question — what you want to find out — plus, if it fits, a hypothesis: your educated guess at the answer, which your research will test.

Choose the design

Your game plan for answering the question. Will you run an experiment? Interview people? Analyze existing data? Different questions call for different methods.

Decide the sample

You usually can't study every person, data point, or object. Decide who or what you'll actually include — and how you'll pick them fairly. That's your sample.

Collect the data

Now you actually gather the information: run the survey, do the experiment, or pull the dataset.

Process & analyze

Raw data doesn't mean much on its own. Organize it, run your calculations or statistics, and look for the patterns and answers hiding inside.

Write the report

Write up what you did, what you found, and what it means — clearly and in a logical order, so others can follow your work and judge it for themselves.

Don't skip stage 2

You can't write a strong question until you know what's already been said about your topic. Reviewing the existing research — that's Step 2 — shows you what's known, what people still argue about, and where the real gaps are. It almost always reshapes your question for the better, so treat it as essential, not a formality.

No question is stupid. The whole point of this stage is to ask lots of questions — even the obvious-sounding ones — because that's exactly how a big, fuzzy interest turns into one sharp, specific question you can research. Ask freely, write them all down, and let the best one rise to the top. Curiosity out loud is the skill here; it's never a sign you're behind.

The heart of it

What makes a strong question?

A research question is one sentence — but not every sentence makes a good one. Write yours below, then check it against the seven marks of a strong question. A weak question isn't wrong; it's just not ready yet.

1. You actually care about it
You'll live with this question for weeks or months, so pick something you genuinely want to know — not just something that sounds impressive. If it bores you now, you'll be miserable by the end.
2. It's specific
You know exactly what you're asking. Vague questions don't tell you what to research.

3. It's narrow
Start with a big, fuzzy idea and shrink it down through reading and thinking. Don't expect to know your narrow question on day one.

4. It isn't a “why” question
“Why” questions spiral outward forever — there are countless causes and the question never really closes. Ask “how does X relate to Y” instead.

5. It's short — one clean sentence
If your question needs three sentences and a pile of clauses to state, it's probably two or three questions smushed together. Split them, and keep the one you care about most.
6. It's not a yes/no question
Yes/no questions get answered in one word and don't require real investigation.

The real method

How you'll actually get there: draft, get feedback, repeat

Here's the part beginners don't expect: you will not nail your question on the first try, and that's completely normal — it's true for experienced researchers too.

  • Draft a rough one. Once you've read around your topic and have a feel for the questions people ask in your field, write your own — even a clunky first version.
  • Show it to someone who knows the field. A teacher, professor, or mentor will probably say it's too broad, too vague, unanswerable, or already done. That's help, not criticism.
  • Rewrite, and show it again. This loop can run five, ten, or more rounds before you land on something solid.
  • Don't wait for “perfect.” There's no perfect first-draft question. The goal isn't to arrive fully formed — it's to keep improving it with input.
  • Ask whenever you're stuck. Research isn't something you're meant to figure out alone. Talking it through with a mentor is a normal, expected part of the process — not a sign you're behind.

If you don't even have a topic yet, work through these five stages. Each one narrows your focus a little more — tap to open each.

1List the themes that interest you

Think broadly about your subject and jot down themes. Ask yourself:

  • What themes interested you in school?
  • What are the current “hot” topics — the ones showing up in research papers or popular articles?
  • If you like a professional field (medicine, teaching, business, law), what issues are people debating?
  • Are any issues especially important where you live?
  • Anything you've been curious about since you were young?

Aim for at least one topic under each question.

2Narrow to a few topics
Look for themes that showed up under more than one question, or rank your themes by how much they interest you. Get down to a short list of two or three favorites.
3Turn topics into questions
For each of those two or three topics, brainstorm the key questions worth asking. Every project investigates a question, so list all the interesting or important ones you can think of.
4Pick one and check it's viable
Choose the question that grabs you most, then pressure-test it: is this a question that needs answering, and can it actually be answered in a project your size? You may cycle through this a few times before one sticks.
5Make your final choice
Once a question survives the viability check, ask the most important question of all: does this genuinely interest and excite me? The answer has to be “yes” — you'll be living with it for a long time.

Three checks we use on every project

Before you lock in a topic, run it past the three questions YRP uses to weigh every project.

Feasibility

Can you pull it off?

Is this doable in the time you have, with the tools and resources you can actually get? Ambitious is good; impossible-in-a-semester is not.

Fit

Does it suit you?

Does this line of research let you show your skills and thinking at their best, setting you up to succeed?

Appropriateness

Is it safe to explore?

Does the topic involve sensitive material that can't be examined safely, or that might make fellow scholars uncomfortable? If so, rethink the angle.

Keep in mind

A few things that trip up beginners

  • Don't go too big. Most first ideas are too ambitious — too much data, questions too general. Keep it tightly focused on one specific thing.
  • Your research doesn't have to change the world. A small, honest, well-answered question beats a grand one you can't finish.
  • Let the question steer. Keep your one question in front of you and keep asking, “Is what I'm doing right now helping answer it?” Having a question doesn't lock you into any one method — it just keeps you on track.
Your move

Do this before Step 2

Write your question in one sentence. Underline the thing you'd measure and the group you'd measure it in — if either is missing, it's not ready. Then run it past the seven checks above and one real person. If it survives both, you're ready to move on.

One-sentence test: “How does [measurable thing] relate to [specific group or setting]?” If your question fits that shape, you're in great starting position.
