Find out what's already known

You've got a question. Before you try to answer it, find out what other people have already discovered. This step — the literature review — is how you learn the conversation, sharpen your question, and make sure you're adding something new.

A literature review is your survey of the research that already exists on your topic — the articles, studies, and books other people have published. It's not busywork, and it's not just a summary you write once. It's how you find out what's already known, what people still argue about, and where the gaps are. Done well, it will reshape your question and point you straight at something worth investigating.

Where to look

Where the real research lives

A regular web search mostly turns up blogs and news. Real studies live in a few specific places — and most are free for students.

Google Scholar

A free search engine just for academic papers. The best starting point for almost any topic.

Tip: click “Cited by” under a paper to jump to newer work that built on it.

Research databases

JSTOR (humanities & social science), PubMed (medicine & biology), ERIC (education), arXiv (physics, math, CS).

Tip: your school or public library often unlocks paywalled databases for free.

Your library & librarian

Librarians find sources for a living and love helping. A five-minute chat can save you hours.

Tip: ask specifically for databases in your subject — they'll know the good ones.

Review articles

Papers that summarize a whole field in one place. They're a map of what's known — and their reference list points you to the key studies.

Tip: search “your topic + review” and start there.

Pro tip · snowballing

Found one great paper? Scroll to its reference list and chase down the sources it used. Then do the same for those. This “snowballing” is the fastest way to map a topic — one good paper leads you to ten more.

How to read a paper without reading every word

Research papers aren't meant to be read front to back like a story. Beginners who try that give up fast. Read in this order instead — tap each part to see why:

The whole paper squeezed into one paragraph. Read this first to decide whether the paper is even relevant — if it's not, move on and save yourself an hour.

Tells you the question they were chasing and why it matters. Great for understanding how your question fits into the bigger picture.

Skip ahead to the payoff: what they found and what they think it means. This is often the most useful part for a literature review.

The results at a glance. A good chart often explains the finding faster than the paragraphs around it. Read the captions carefully.

Exactly how they did the study. Read this closely only when the paper matters to you or you might borrow their approach — otherwise, skim.

Don't feel you must read every paper fully. Triage: read the abstract, decide if it's worth more, and only then dive deeper.

Is this source trustworthy?

Not everything online is reliable. Run a source through these six signals — tick the ones it passes and watch the meter. The more it passes, the sturdier it is.

SturdyA study in a journal, or a report from a university or government agency.
ShakyAn anonymous blog post or a random content farm.

You don't need all six every time — but if a source misses most of them (no author, no date, no sources), be cautious.

As you read, mentally file everything into one of three buckets. The third one is gold — it's where your question comes from.

Things researchers already agree on. Useful background — but don't build your question here. It's answered.

What's debated

Where the experts disagree. A great place to weigh in with fresh evidence or a new angle.

Your opening

What's missing

The gaps nobody has covered — a group, place, or angle no one studied. This is where your question lives.

Turn the gap into a question

Fill in this sentence as you read: “Most research says ______, but I couldn't find anything on ______.” That second blank is your question. Example: plenty of studies on screens and sleep in adults — almost none in high-schoolers.

Stay organized

Keep track as you go

Future-you will not remember where that perfect quote came from. Set up a simple system now and save yourself a nightmare later.

  • Keep a research log. For every source, jot the citation, its main finding, and one line on how it relates to your question.
  • A spreadsheet works great. Columns like source, year, method, finding, notes let you spot patterns and gaps at a glance.
  • Save citations as you find them. A free tool like Zotero grabs the full citation in one click — far easier than rebuilding them at the end.
  • Write down your search terms. Note which words and databases you tried, so you can retrace your steps and avoid repeating searches.
Watch out for

Traps beginners fall into

  • Only using a normal web search. You'll miss the actual research. Start with Scholar or a database.
  • Trusting the first result. Check who wrote it, when, and whether it cites anything.
  • Reading only the abstract and assuming you understand the whole study.
  • Ignoring the date on a fast-moving topic where old findings may be out of date.
  • Copying wording. Always put things in your own words and cite the source — never paste.
  • Only collecting sources you agree with. Look for the ones that challenge you, too.
Do this now: find 5–8 solid sources and log what each one found. Then finish this sentence — “Most research says ______, but I haven't found anything on ______” — and you'll have both a literature review and a sharper question.
