Architecture is the art and science of designing and engineering large structures and buildings — and studying how those buildings and spaces shape the people who use them.

Turning an interest into a question

A topic isn't a research question. Narrow to one building, one feature, and one thing you can actually find out about it.

Start from a place you can reach

The best questions come from a building or space you can visit more than once, or one you can find real drawings and records for.

Narrow to one building and one feature

Not “skyscrapers” but one tower; not “the whole building” but its entrance, its light, or its stairs.

Make it a “how / why” or a comparison

Questions that ask how or why, or compare two buildings, give you something to argue instead of just describe.

Check that you can gather evidence

Can you visit it, read its plans, or find its history in the time you have?

Too broad: “Why are skyscrapers important?”
Workable: “How does the seating layout of my school library shape where students choose to sit and study?”
Doing the work

Methods & where to look

Pair a method you can actually carry out with sources that show how architects and historians build an argument.

Common methods

  • Site visits & observation: repeat visits, noting light, flow, and how people really use the space.
  • Reading drawings: plan, section, and elevation (see below).
  • Precedent studies: comparing two or three buildings that solve the same problem.
  • Archival research: old plans, permits, and historical photos.
  • Behavioral mapping: sketching where people sit, walk, and gather.

For a school paper, a repeat site visit plus a few precedent studies is very doable.

Where to find sources

  • Databases: the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, JSTOR, and Google Scholar.
  • Journals: Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH) and Architectural Record.
  • Archives: HABS/HAER at the Library of Congress (measured drawings of historic U.S. buildings), plus your city's planning office and local historical society.
  • Learn to read drawings: Francis D. K. Ching, Architecture: Form, Space, and Order.

Scholarly ≠ popular — sites like ArchDaily are great for examples, but build your argument on peer-reviewed work.

The core skill

Reading a building

Almost every claim in an architecture paper is backed by a drawing. Three views describe any building — learn to read all three before you write about one.

Plan

A view straight down, with one floor sliced horizontally. Shows how rooms connect and how you move through.

Section

A vertical cut through the building. Shows heights, how floors stack, and the spaces you can't see in plan.

Elevation

A straight-on view of one exterior face. Shows proportion, windows, materials, and style.

Then watch it in use: the most interesting findings come from the gap between how a space was drawn and how people actually use it.

On site: get permission before entering or photographing private property, stay safe, and note the date and time of each visit so your observations are citable.
